… or rather, ‘left-tusked’! Elephants have a preferred tusk for digging up earth and uprooting trees and will only use the other if their tusk-of-choice becomes severely injured.

Reason to love elephants, No. 4: Their ears are the shape of Africa

Did you know African elephants have much bigger ears than an Asian elephants. But as well as using their ears to signal if they’re10377091_10152591414954889_3961411822370911762_n alarmed or angry, flapping them also cools them down!

Time to Say Goodbye to the Elephant

This is not easy viewing. But I would challenge anyone to watch it and NOT do anything about it at all.  Even sharing information with one other person, signing a petition or joining in one of the 105 Global March For Elephants and Rhinos  that are taking place around the world. Please don’t stand by and do nothing.

Global March for Elephant and Rhinos October 4th, 2014- 100 cities are marching

Image

Elephants and rhinos will be extinct in 10 years if poachers and the rhino horn and ivory trade aren’t stopped. More and more people around the world are becoming aware of this problem and are coming together to raise their voices in defense of these animals who are entrenched in a global war on wildlife. Please use your voice and put an end to this. As of June 2nd people in 89 cities around the world are marching to raise awareness to stop wildlife crime of endangered species. Find your city and if you can’t, organize a march in your city. If you’ve never done it before email  me (punkdawgz@gmail.com). Neither have I and we can have fun brainstorming:)

Vancouverites,  your city is here.  The rest of the world your cities can be found here!

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust #FosterFriday – Garzi

As a build up to the upcoming Symposium on International Wildlife Trafficking in London on February 11th and 12th I want to share stories and tales of the wildlife that is trying to be saved. My focus is elephants but the more I look the more I see and the bigger the problems seem to get. Tigers, rhinos, lions…anything that moves seem to be a target. It’s harder to guess what’s not under siege.

But today let’s focus on this story – the story of Garzi and his rescue by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. This is a good story but nevertheless heart wrenching for what this poor guy has to go through. Luckily he lands in safe, warm loving hands. This is just a fraction of the work that this organization does.  Here is Garzi’s story.
