Pictures – Global March for Elephants and Rhinos – Vancouver

I am proud to have been a part of this amazing, grassroots event that took place October 4th in 136 cities around the world where people all marched to end the ivory and rhino horn trades that threaten these species. Here are a few pictures from the Vancouver event:

Reason to love elephants, No. 2 Elephants can be left handed

… or rather, ‘left-tusked’! Elephants have a preferred tusk for digging up earth and uprooting trees and will only use the other if their tusk-of-choice becomes severely injured.

Herds for life, it’s the females that rule the roost in elephant herds, which are comprised of several generations of female relatives (aunts, sisters and cousins).

Reason to love elephants, No. 4: Their ears are the shape of Africa

Did you know African elephants have much bigger ears than an Asian elephants. But as well as using their ears to signal if they’re10377091_10152591414954889_3961411822370911762_n alarmed or angry, flapping them also cools them down!

Hallmark is selling ivory….as a perfect 14th anniversary present

Hi everyone,

Thanks for  your quick response, reblogs and shares. It appears that Hallmark has removed the ivory reference. This is the customer service message I received from their office:

hank you for contacting Hallmark.

Thanks for expressing your concern about the inclusion of ivory on our anniversary gift list. The traditional anniversary gift list was created in the 1930s by the American National Retail Jeweler Association. Our article was intended to be informational, but we understand the concerns about illegal ivory products and want it to be clear that we don’t condone the ivory trade in any way. We are in the process of updating the list based on your feedback.

We appreciate your taking the time to let us know your feelings.

Thanks,

Hallmark is promoting IVORY as a 14th wedding anniversary gift on their website and posting this blatant falsehood: “Many pieces of beautiful jewelry showcase ivory shed naturally from animals. Look online for options.” at this link:http://www.hallmark.com/anniversary/ideas/wedding-anniversary-gifts/#list14

ACTION: Please EMAIL or CALL Hallmark to educate them that ALL ivory products come from slaughtered elephants and much ivory for sale is ILLEGAL ivory!
Email Hallmark at this link: http://hallmark.custhelp.com/app/ask
Phone Hallmark at this TOLL-FREE number: 1-800-HALLMARK (1-800-425-5627)
Post on Hallmark‘s FB page at this link:https://www.facebook.com/HALLMARK

Sample Post or Email to send:

Your website has ivory listed as the 14th wedding anniversary gift, an outdated and today often ILLEGAL item. Furthermore, Hallmark is spreading the blatant falsehood that ivory jewelry comes from ivory that is “shed naturally from animals”. No, Hallmark, elephants’ tusks do not fall out naturally! Elephants are brutally poached for their tusks with poisoned arrows or gunned down in cold blood to make ivory jewelry. Elephants’ tusks extend deep into their skulls and their faces are hacked off, often while they’re still alive, to remove the entire tusk.

ALL ivory is blood ivory. An elephant is poached for its ivory every 15 minutes; that’s 96 elephants that are killed daily. Between 35,000-52,000 elephants are killed each year for ivory, and unless all ivory trade is banned worldwide, elephants will be extinct in the wild in 10 years or less.

Your irresponsible website post supports this killing and justifies the illegal slaughter of this highly intelligent, self-aware and emotionally sentient keystone species for trinkets! Please find an alternative listing for a 14th wedding anniversary gift and immediately remove the inaccurate, misleading sentence: “Many pieces of beautiful jewelry showcase ivory shed naturally from animals. Look online for options.” Stop supporting and promoting the slaughter of elephants for ivory jewelry!

Ignorance lives right next door. Please share. This is a good thing for people to learn.

Time to Say Goodbye to the Elephant

This is not easy viewing. But I would challenge anyone to watch it and NOT do anything about it at all.  Even sharing information with one other person, signing a petition or joining in one of the 105 Global March For Elephants and Rhinos  that are taking place around the world. Please don’t stand by and do nothing.
